From Wood Waste to Renewable Energy! |
|
Using federal, state and local funds the City of Craig is constructing a wood fired boiler heating system to supplement propane and oil heating systems for the municipal pool water, pool building and the Craig Elementary and Middle School buildings. The new facility will use wood shavings, chips, hog fuel and dried planer shavings from local mills as fuel. The system will be maintained by the Craig City School District.
The designed boiler system will output approximately 4 million BTU by burning wood waste products and transferring the resulting energy to the identified facilities as hot water. The piped hot water will be sufficient to heat the pool water, the pool building, the elementary school building and the middle school building. Existing propane and fuel oil systems will be maintained for backup and supplemental heat.
Funding for this project has been provided by the USDA Forest Service, USDA National Resource Conservation Service, Alaska Energy Authority, the Denali Commission, and the City of Craig.
Installation of this system will result in cost savings of $40,000 - $60,000 per year between the municipal pool and the school buildings. The project will also reduce the reliance on petroleum products for heating. The project will also help local mill owners by utilizing wood waste generated by them. |
