GENERAL INFORMATION:
Drivers License:
Getting a license in Alaska coming in from another state:
This is what you'll need to bring in:

  1. A valid license from your previous state.
  2. A certified copy of your birth certificate OR a valid U.S. or Canadian Passport.
  3. Proof of name change if your name is different from your birth certificate (i.e. a marriage license or court documents proving this).
  4. $20.00 cash or check. You will need to take the written test and pass it prior to being issued your new Alaska driver's license. DMV no longer provides booklets for written tests.

SCHEDULING ROAD TESTS:
Road tests must be scheduled ahead of time with a prepaid $15.00 fee (check or cash) at the time you schedule. If you fail to show up for your road test the $15.00 is forfeited. If you are unable to arrive at your scheduled time, you may call prior to that date to reschedule. You can schedule at the Craig Police Department Monday through Friday between 8:00am - 4:00pm.   DMV no longer provides booklets for written tests.

FEES:
Fees may vary - the following is a general list for non-commercial vehicles:

$100.00 - Two year registration for all non-commercial passenger vehicles.
$60.00 -  For a two year registration for motorcycles.
$30.00 -  For a two year registration for a non-commercial trailer.
$15.00 -  For a new title
$15.00 -  Additional charge if you have a lien holder (if you owe money to a bank or other entity for the vehicle).

*Example: If you need to register your boat trailer it would cost you $30 for the registration and $15 for the title for a total of $45.

PROVISIONAL LICENSES:
Teenage drivers with provisional licenses can apply for a license removing the restriction after completing a six-month probationary period without any violations. If you are under 18, you MUST bring a parent to sign. There is a $15 fee for a duplicate license. You must ask to remove the "provisional" restrictions from the license as it does not automatically change.

VEHICLE TRANSACTIONS:
Generally, every vehicle transaction is different depending on the state, releasing signatures, etc. therefore you will need to bring in your documentation and completed forms to be examined by the DMV agent. The general rule of thumb is "You need a title to get a title". Bring in your current title with you, complete the Vehicle Registration form, and provide payment. These are very general rules. Please visit the DMV website for the detailed information of the requirements.

CDL ROAD TESTING:
CDL Road Testing is done by emailing Travis Tuttle at TJT@craigpd.com.   DMV no longer provides booklets for written tests.

CDL FEES:

Class A Road Test - $205.00 dollars

Class B Road Test - $160.00 dollars

Class C Road Test - $160.00 dollars

MOTORCYCLE TESTING: Not available at this time.

Z TAB:  If your vehicle is 8 years old or older and you live on Prince of Wales Island, you do qualify for the Z TAB; which is a permanent registration for that vehicle. Pay an extra $25.00 dollars when you register your vehicle and then you never have to register it again.

PERSONALIZED PLATES:
If you would like to obtain personalized plates for your vehicle, the easiest way is to go to the State DMV website click on the link for personalized plates. This allows you to see if the plate you want is available, and to see exactly what it looks like, and order it in one easy step.

DMV TIPS:
For drop off service you must have cash or a check.  Debit/Credit Cards are accepted only when DMV is open. Checks should be made out to the City of Craig.
Forms and books are available at the DMV, CPD Dispatch, or on line at the State of Alaska DMV site if you want to complete them ahead of time.
