Tsunami Ready

Craig, along with many other coastal Alaska communities, it susceptible to both long range Tsunamis and Tsunamis generated by nearby underwater or coastal landslides.  Long range Tsunamis may give hours of notice before a Tsunami wave reaches Craig.  Tsunamis caused by local submarine or coastal landslides may give only minutes.  Craig is recognized as a Tsunami Ready Community by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Weather Service for Tsunami preparedness.

What to do -

  • If you feel an earthquake that lasts for more than thirty seconds, or one that makes it hard to stay standing you should immediately move to higher ground.
  • If you hear the Tsunami Warning Siren activate (outside of scheduled tests), you should immediately move to higher ground.  The siren will be tested monthly on the first Wednesday of each month at noon.
  • If a Tsunami warning is issued by Wireless Emergency Alert, weather radio, cell phone application, or some other method you should tune in for more information.  You can get direct information by going to www.tsunami.gov.  The City of Craig will be pushing out information on the website, Facebook page, VHF channel 16, and Omnilert during the warning phase of a Tsunami.  Follow the instructions provided by local officials.  If you feel that you need extra time getting to safety, or are concerned about not getting enough information in time, then you may evacuate to  higher ground.
  • If an evacuation notice is given please stay at high ground until notified that it is clear by local officials.

Where to go -

  • If you decide to self evacuate, or if an evacuation notice is given the city and the Craig School District will open the City Gym, Craig High School, Craig Middle School, Craig Recreation Center, and Craig Aquatic Center as evacuation points.
